TEHRAN – Deputy labor minister for Foreign Nationals Employment says labor ministry has suspended the plan to issue work permits for Afghan nationals.

“The decision has been adopted due to Afghanistan Tehran embassy’s failure to cooperate with Iran’s labor ministry to issue visas for Afghans,” Mohammad Hasan Salehi Maram told ISNA.

“Per the agreement signed between the labor minister and Afghan ambassador to Tehran, Afghan embassy was supposed to take steps to convert Afghan’s LP cards to visas, but has so far failed to do so,” the official explained.

Salehi Maram put the number of Afghans holding LP cards at one million out of whom 308,000 have registered to receive working permits.

“However, by virtue of article 120 of Labor Law, working permits will only be issued to those who hold a passport but none of the registered own any passports due to Afghan’s embassy’s failure to keep its pledge,” he reiterated.

“However, since all of these 308, 000 applicants have paid the necessary sums to receive such working permits, they will be allowed to keep up working in the Islamic Republic by the end of the current month (21 September) ,” he maintained. “However, they will be required to leave the country after the deadline runs out.”

The deputy labor minister elsewhere pointed to the law regarding those employing illegal Afghan nationals with no working permit saying that such employers must pay a sum of nearly 40 dollars per day for their illegal employment of Afghans.
